ADVANCED TECHNOLOGIES AND ROAD SAFETY
This paper was presented at the 'Transportation Technology Innovations' session. This paper reports on a study undertaken to review existing advanced technologies that have the potential to reduce the frequency and/or severity of vehicle collisions, and to perform preliminary cost effectiveness analysis. General principles were indentified as guidelines to be followed in selecting and assessing these technologies. The principles included: high potential for collision reduction; technological feasibility; economical feasibility and community acceptance of the new technology. Several technologies have been reviewed which cover both Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) and non-ITS technologies, and include analytical and hardware systems. The technologies reviewed included: Real-Time Weather Warning Systems; Real-Time Truck Warning Systems; Lighted Guidance Tube Curve Warning; Artificial Intelligence Systems; Traffic Incident Management. The paper summarises the results of the evaluation and identifies the technologies that were found to offer a good potential for quantifiable safety benefits.
