GET ON TRACK FOR GRADE CROSSING SAFETY
According to Federal Railroad Association preliminary reports, 432 people were killed and 1,431 injured in 4,159 highway-rail crossing collisions in 1996. Trespasser casualties accounted for 610 deaths and 730 injuries. While crashes declined approximately 10% from 1995, many organizations are striving harder than ever to encourage safer behavior at crossings. The article looks at programs designed to improve safety at grade crossings; and concludes that strict enforcement of laws and safety education can help reduce, and perhaps almost eliminate railroad tragedies.
