BUS TRANSIT TRANSFERS

Nearly all bus transit systems have some transferring passengers who must connect between services to get to their destination. A variety of rules and common practices have grown up to support this over the years. However, transfers are a problem for transit agencies--many feel they are cheated by passengers and the transfer is a major cause of altercations between drivers and passengers. This paper examines some of the recent trends as transit systems deal with the problems associated with transfers. One approach is to sell day passes and eliminate transfer rules entirely. In the US and Europe some attention is being paid to making transferring easier through service design. This includes guaranteed meets published in the schedules, transit centers and interlining. Automatic Vehicle Location and computer scheduling systems are also being used to assure that connection will be made. Technology can also replace the traditional paper transfer with magnetic stripe cards. Such systems have the potential to automate issuance and receipt of transfers and provide more information on operations.
