U.S. EXPERIENCE WITH TRAFFIC CALMING
Traffic Calming has been called the most significant new idea in the last 30 years. Transportation planning is becoming more sensitive to the social costs of automobile use. The once single minded idea of the pursuit of speed and capacity is being tempered by other social concerns and traffic calming fits right in with the new approach. This article describes how a consulting firm, retained to develop a traffic calming plan for a small Florida city, went about gathering data and information relating to traffic calming programs elsewhere in the country. An analysis of the first survey of this kind to focus on traffic calming and the information gathered is presented.
