EXPERIENCE WITH POROUS ASPHALT IN THE UNITED KINGDOM

The development of a specification for porous asphalt which provides a durable surfacing is reviewed with special attention being given to the selection of the binder content of the mixture and methods of 'stabilising' the coating on the aggregate. Examples are given of the use of porous asphalt on motorways, in particular, the comparison of various national specifications under heavily trafficked conditions. Also, porous asphalt has been used as an overlay for jointed Portland cement concrete. In the latter case there was no evidence of reflective cracking after two years in service. The introduction of the national specification in the UK has not led to the widespread use of this type of surfacing because it is considerably more expensive than conventional materials. Also, the thin surfacings which are becoming widely available in the UK, and in many other countries, are providing some of the advantages of porous asphalt, without the disadvantages.
