SKIDDING AND TEXTURE
The factors influencing friction betwen the tyre and road surface are discussed. Skid resistance and the standardisation of its measurement are considered. The historical development of systems in the Netherlands, UK, Germany and France are described. The development by PIARC of the IFI (International Friction Index) is outlined and problems associated with skid resistance measurements in porous asphalt discussed. An investigation into the skidding resistance of porous asphalt found no marked difference from dense asphalt. On new porous asphalt surfaces low braking deceleration was observed. The reasons for this and some solutions are discussed. For the covering abstract see IRRD 890329.
