HYDRAULIC CONDUCTIVITY OF POROUS ASPHALT

The hydraulic conductivity of porous asphalt is related to the interconnected voids within the surfacing and it is this property that markedly influences other aspects of performance of the material. The factors which control hydraulic conductivity are discussed and the current development within the European Specifications and Test Procedures are discussed. The major problem with porous asphalt is to prevent the clogging of the pores, which reduces the hydraulic conductivity. The cleaning of porous asphalt is seen as a short-term, partial remedy for clogging which may be used in certain circumstances. Evidence from various countries is presented and it is concluded that the design of the material should focus on providing voids as large as practicable, taking into account factors such as durability.
