MISSISSIPPI ROAD AGENCY CHANGES WITH THE TIMES
This article explains the operation and mission of the Mississippi Office of State Aid Road Construction, created in 1950 to establish farm-to-market roads. The agency is charged with the construction of roads and bridges as well as signage, striping, and other traffic safety responsibilities. There are 48 county engineers in the Mississippi State Aid program, all of whom are private consultants who perform project presentation, evaluation, and quality checks on all state-aid work performed in their counties. State Aid assists the county engineers with the design, contracting, and completion of highway construction projects. When the Environmental Protection Agency challenged Mississippi State Aid to find environmentally safe materials, the use of alternatives to solvent-based paint was investigated. A hot-spray pavement marking material was identified. The product is so effective that it eliminated the need for yearly restriping.
