HOW TO SELECT PAVEMENT REHAB STRATEGIES
The key to selecting rehabilitation strategies is making a thorough evaluation of the existing pavement. This includes understanding of the design of the existing pavement, the materials used, the traffic history, and the construction techniques used. In addition, investigation of particular aspects of the pavement, such as material performance, are often required. The evaluation of project history should include: (1) An understanding of the project's design history; (2) A thorough assessment of the traffic history (progressive accumulation of loads, including the time of applications); (3) An evaluation of the materials used and any problems associated with them, including identification of the sources and types of materials used; (4) A general understanding of past construction practices; (5) A climatic history of the project site; and (6) A thorough understanding of the subgrade type, characteristics, and behavior.
