HVS-AIDED VALIDATION OF PAVEMENT BEHAVIOR AT LOW TEMPERATURE (WITH DISCUSSION)
This paper contains a description of the work done to investigate the possible effect of low temperature and aging on the development of premature cracks in asphalt pavements. The work involved accelerated testing of specially constructed pavements using the Heavy Vehicle Simulator (HVS) in conjunction with a temperature chamber with which the pavement temperature could be varied between -10 deg C and 50 deg C. Tests were carried out on new and artificially aged surfaces at ambient and subzero temperatures. The following specific objectives were formulated for the test program: (1) Establishment of the occurrence (if any) and the nature of cracks that develop at low temperatures after the application of a limited number of wheel load repetitions; (2) Comparison of the crack susceptibility of the different surfacings; (3) Comparison of the crack susceptibility of aged and unaged surfacings with different mixes; (4) Determination of the effect of the aging process on the different mixes in terms of the changes in viscosity and oxidation levels of the bitumen; and (5) Comparison of the actual pavement behavior with that predicted by the CRACK computer program.
