SEGREGATION OF ASPHALTIC MIXTURES (WITH DISCUSSION)
Segregation of asphaltic mixtures results in nonuniform mixes that do not duplicate the original design, grading, or asphalt content. The resulting pavement is poor and short lived. Segregation problems are the responsibility of all who produce and lay asphalt. Their elimination is essential to the production of a quality paved road. This paper has been written to help designers, plant operators, and paving crews be aware of the causes of segregation and the available potential cures. Each process of the plant and the paving procedures that can cause segregation is discussed in separate sections of the paper. A diagnostic chart has been developed to help identify types of segregation and their probable cause.
