PATCH REPAIRS AND CATHODIC PROTECTION
This article describes two conventional methods of handling cracking and spalling due to concrete reinforcement corrosion. The appropriate choice of method depends on understanding the cause of the problems in each specific case. If the corrosion has been induced by carbonation or chloride ingress, patch repairs may be used, although precautions are needed in the case of chloride corrosion. If the corrosion has been caused by alkali-silica reaction (ASR) or any other failure mechanism, the repair may need to be specifically designed, and it is impossible to generalise about what approach should be taken. Recommended patch repair methods are detailed for the cases of corrosion induced by carbonation and chlorides. They are only a guide, and apply only to conventionally reinforced structures. The technique of cathodic protection is applied to prevent the corrosion of steel reinforcement in concrete. It artificially shifts the potential of a metal reinforcement, so that it becomes either immune or passive. Its variants include sacrificial anode cathodic protection and impressed current cathodic protection. Various methods have been used for the cathodic protection of steel in concrete, and use a variety of anode systems.
