PROPERTIES OF POROUS ASPHALT
An assessment of the properties of a porous asphalt mix whose gradation was developed from a study of the packing behaviour of aggregate particles. A porous mix made with this gradation (PR) is compared with BS gradation. The bitumen used to prepare the porous asphalt were a 100 pen base bitumen (B100), an acrylic polymer modified bitumen (ACR) and a styrene-butadiene-styrene polymer modified bitumen (SBS). The mixes were compacted by the Gyratory Testing Machine and an impact compaction hammer. The results indicate that porous asphalt differ significantly from dense mixes. Within the range of bitumen content investigated, the workability index, density, porosity, permeability and VMA of the compacted mixes are linearly correlated to the bitumen content. PR and BS mixes are not distinguishable in terms of their volumetric properties, however the PR mixes are more permeable. Although there is not a unique relation between permeability and porosity for each mix type investigated, the permeability varied lineary with porosity. The impact compactor produced denser specimens than the gyratory compactor. At a given porosity, the gyratory specimens are about 1.5 times more permeable than the impact specimens due to the more random aggregate orientation. (A) For the covering abstract see IRRD 890024.
