POROUS ASPHALT ON THE BLACKWATER VALLEY

This paper describes the use of porous asphalt by Surrey County Council on the Blackwater Valley Route where noise reduction was an important factor. The contractor was responsible for designing the porous asphalt mix to achieve the requirements of the County. This was for a 30mm porous asphalt layer with a minimum of 25% voids, a maximum aggregate size of 10mm and a rubber modified binder. Brief details are given of the design process, manufacture and site trial. A 4km length of dual carriageway was laid during June and July 1996. Details are given of the on-going programme which is monitoring aspects including skidding resistance, hydraulic conductivity, texture depth, rutting, noise, spray and ice detection. Routine, winter and major maintenance are discussed. For the covering abstract see IRRD 890024.
