BLISTERING IN WATERPROOFING MEMBRANES FOR BRIDGES

BLISTERING I MEMBRANER TIL BROISOLERING

When concrete bridge waterproofing work is carried out on warm summer days, small air-filled blisters can be formed under the bituminous membranes. These blisters can increase in size and create big bumps in the pavement. When traffic passes over these bumps, severe damage can occur in both the waterproofing layer and the pavement placed on top of it. In the present research project a large number of experiments have been carried out in order to clarify the effect of different parameters on the formation of blisters. Most experiments were made with heating lamps placed over concrete specimens with waterproofing insulation. These experiments showed that the moisture condition of the concrete at the time of placing of the bituminous membrane was a very important factor. The most severe blister formation occurred with a concrete that had been dried corresponding to present practice, i.e. about 2-3 weeks after casting. No blister formation was recorded when the waterproofing layer was applied onto an approximately water saturated concrete surface.
