DEVELOPMENT, PERSPECTIVES AND APPLICATIONS OF ELECTRICAL VEHICLES

THE INTRODUCTION OF INNOVATIVE VEHICLES COULD SIGNIFICANTLY AMELIORATE THE CRITICAL SITUATION OF AIR QUALITY IN ITALIAN URBAN AREAS, WHERE THE ENVIRONMENTAL EMERGENCY IS A DAILY OCCURENCE: THE TRANSPORTATION SECTOR ACCOUNTS FOR MORE THAN 95% OF CARBON MONOXIDE AND 50% OF NITROGEN OXIDES IN LARGE METROPOLITAN AREAS (ROME AND MILAN). FURTHERMORE, THE USE OF INNOVATIVE VEHICLES WITH ALTERNATIVE FUELS MIGHT BENEFICIALLY AFFECT THE ITALIAN ENERGY SITUATION BY THE DIVERSIFICATION OF PRIMARY ENERGY SOURCES SO STRONGLY DEPENDENT ON FOSSIL FUELS: ABOUT 30% OF THE TOTAL ENERGY CONSUMPTION IS FROM THE TRANSPORTATION SECTOR, AND 95% OF THIS IS FOR ROAD TRANSPORT, TOTALLY CONSTITUTED BY IMPORTED OIL. SINCE THE EARLY 80'S ENEA (ITALIAN AGENCY FOR NEW TECHNOLOGY, ENERGY ENVIRONMENT) HAS BEEN CONDUCTING RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT ACTIVITIES IN THE TRANSPORTATION SECTOR IN ORDER TO IMPROVE ENERGY SAVINGS AND REDUCE ENVIROMENTAL IMPACTS. IN 1991, TWO INSTITUTIONAL ACTS HAVE GREATLY STRESSED THE EMPHASIS ON THESE OBJECTIVES: THE LAW 282/91 AND THE LAWS 9 AND 10/91. THIS PAPER THROUGHLY DESCRIBES THE STATUS OF ELECTRIC/HYBRID VEHICLES, THEIR POTENTIAL APPLICATIONS, MAIN PROGRAM GOALS AND MAJOR RESULTS OF ENEA PROGRAMMES, OBTAINED IN RECENT YEARS OR FORSEEN IN FUTURE ACTIVITIES.
