COST EFFICIENCY STUDY OF INTRODUCING LIGHTWEIGHT RAILCARS ON LOW-TRAFFIC RURAL LINES IN ITALY
In several European countries the responsibility for regional public transportation is being transferred to local or regional authorities, many of which will not be able to afford the costs of regional railway operation. Passenger services on some lines may thus have to be suspended. This article presents the results of a study that has been carried out by the University of Genova to determine the cost-efficiency that could be achieved by introducing the operation of lightweight railcars on low-traffic rural lines in Italy.
