BRIDGE BASH RULES NOW OUT

This article explains the new regulations on 'bridge bashing', where high vehicles or loads collide with low bridges. The Road Vehicles (Construction and Use) (Amendment) (No 530) Regulations 1997 were recently finalised by the Department of Transport (DOT), and will become law in Great Britain, though not in Northern Ireland, on 1 October 1997. From that date, cab notices will be required, where the total travelling height exceeds 3m. From 1 April or 1 October 1998, depending on the vehicle's age, automatic warning devices will be required, for vehicles where power-operated high-level equipment is fitted. The regulations replace Section 10 of the 1986 C & U Regulations. The article describes in detail: (1) the new regulations for vehicles and trailers without high-level equipment; (2) the new regulations for vehicles with high-level equipment; (3) the extensive exemptions and relaxations from the warning device requirements, including the types of high-level equipment and the many types of vehicle that do not require a warning device; (4) how the new regulations affect tippers; (5) requirements for international journeys; and (6) relevant definitions.
