DDL (DOUBLE DRAINING LAYER): A NEW GENERATION OF POROUS ASPHALT PAVEMENTS DEVELOPED BY AUTOVIE VENETE

A new porous asphalt pavement has been developed by Autovie Road Research Center with the following goals: (a) to reduce the production cost of a porous pavement; (b) to increase the skid resistance and the sound absorbing characteristics; (c) to facilitate the periodical cleaning of the pavement; (d) to increase the durability and drainage performance. To this purpose, after a long laboratory research for the optimization of asphalt mixes, a new pavement has been realized, with the application of two draining layers: (1) the under layer of 3 cm thickness, with calcareous low cost aggregates (0-12 mm); (2) the surface layer of 1.5 cm. with basaltic aggregates (0-6 mm). For both layers a hard modified bitumen is used (5% weight on the mix). At the base of the pavement a type SAMI layer (1.5 - 2.0 Kg/mq) with modified asphalt is employed. The pavement has been applied for the first time on the AUTOVIE VENETE (Venice-Trieste motorway) network September '95. For the mix design special attention was paid for drainage and sound absorbing properties, in comparison with traditional porous asphalt pavements. The mechanical and rheological behaviour of the mix is reported in the paper together with the functional characteristics of the pavement measured on the road.
