THE EFFECT OF THE AGGREGATE QUALITY ON THE PAVEMENT WEAR THAT STUDDED PASSENGER CAR TYRES CAUSE TO DENSE ASPHALTIC CONCRETE HAB 16--A FACTOR STUDY IN THE TRAFFIC SIMULATOR OF THE INSTITUTE

STENMATERIALKVALITETENS INFLYTANDE PA DET SLITAGE DUBBADE PERSONBILSDACK ASAMKAR TAT ASFALBETONG HAB 16

A test run was carried out in the traffic simulator of the institute (VTI) in order to study to what extent there is a correlation between the Swedish abrasion value, flakiness index and impact value of the aggregate on the one hand, and the amount of wear that studded passenger car tyres cause to dense asphaltic concrete HAB 16 (maximum particle size = 16 mm) on the other, and to study the effect of the mineralogical composition in this connection and to rank different aggregates. The test was carried out on ten different aggregates, each represented by eight pavement samples. In four of the samples the aggregate studied, only comprised the grains over 8 mm, in the other four samples the grains over 4 mm. Disregarding the flakiness index the aggregate quality had a great effect on the amount of pavement wear. The aggregate abrasion value correlated rather well to the pavement wear. A particularly good correlation was obtained between the pavement wear on the one hand and the product of the corrected abrasion value and the squared root of impact value or the square of the cube root of the impact value on the other. The flakiness index had a very small effect on the pavement wear. The test run was made at extremely low speed. /Author/
