BRIDGE NO. 70-0030 ACROSS STOBDRUPVEJ PRACTICAL EXPERIMENT WITH HIGH STRENGTH CONCRETE OBSERVATIONS AND EXPERIENCE

BRO NR. 70-0030, OF AF STOBDRUPVEJ FORSOEG MED HOEJSTYRKEBETON I PRAKSIS OBSERVATIONER OG ERFARINGER

The bridge across Stobdrupvej, south of Randers in Jutland, is a high strength concrete bridge. The bridge was constructed 1991-92 as an experimental bridge and part of the framework programme "High-performance concrete in the 90s" of the "Materials Technology Development Programme" - a programme designed to promote the utilization of the most recent advances in research and development within the field of materials technology by the Danish industry. The structural design of the bridge across Stodrupvej did not take the high strength of the concrete into account. The dimensions and reinforcement of the structural members remained unchanged while the ordinary concrete applied for motorway bridges in Denmark was altered to the high strength concrete. The high strength concrete applied was proportioned to obey a characteristic compression cylinder strength of at least 75 MPa at a maturity age of 28 days. The binder of the concrete consists of low alkali, sulfate resisting Portland cement, silica fume and fly ash. The target value of the water/binder-ratio was 0.34 and the target value of the equivalent water cement-ratio was 0.30 applying the efficient factors of fly ash and silica fume of 0.5 and 2.0 respectively. The mean value of the slump of the concrete at the concrete plant was 230 mm. After 30 minutes of transportation the slump of the concrete was decreased to 180 mm just before pumping. (A)
