INNOVATIVE BARRIERS COMBAT URBAN RAIL NOISE
The article describes the development and application of innovative low level noise barrier technology on London's Docklands Light Railway. The research program first identified the vehicle rolling noise as the dominant noise source on straight line ballast track and at moderate speeds, and that the major contribution was from the wheels; more minor contributors included compressor noise and contact noise between the traction current pick-up shoes and the third rail at low speeds. These findings effectively placed the source of train noise near rail height.
