ADVANCED TRAVELER INFORMATION KIOSK PROJECT - TRAVELINK

By June of 1996, the Georgia Department of Transportation, along with the GeorgiaNet Authority, will place approximately 130 electronic, touch screen traveler information kiosks in the Atlanta region and at certain locations around the state. These ADA accessible kiosks will provide relevant traveler information in multiple languages to allow travelers to more easily traverse the Atlanta region. The system will serve as an information link to the traveler, providing real-time traffic and incident data from the newly installed ATMS, point to point vehicle route planning, transit schedule information and transit route itinerary planning, tourism information, current weather information, airline schedule information, rideshare information and special event information such as Olympic schedules and parking information. These kiosks will be placed at transit stations, airports, hotels, public and private office buildings, visitor centers, rest areas, hospitals, and shopping centers. The target audience for these kiosks will be visitors, daily commuters, transit system users, pedestrians, and fleet operators. The Department has teamed with the GeorgiaNet Authority for this innovative project. Under an agreement signed last fall, Georgia Net has accepted the responsibility of owning and maintaining the kiosks in the future. GeorgiaNet was formed in 1990 to centrally market and sell, on-line or in volume, authorized public state information. This paper will discuss both the design of the kiosk system and the multiple partnerships that are necessary to provide successful implementation of the overall system.
