MULTIMODAL INFORMATION SYSTEMS ON TRANS-EUROPEAN NETWORKS - INFOTEN - HARTMUT
In the context of the European Commission's global concept for a common strategy for sustainable mobility there are two major objectives of the project INFOTEN. First, to establish a multimodal, multicentre communication network within and between European regions as backbone for traffic and transport information services. Second, to demonstrate and validate with this backbone communication network in public and private partnership dynamic telematics applications for value added information services and for effective traffic management on Trans-European Networks (Air, Rail and Road). Thus, INFOTEN aims to improve the intra-modal efficiency of the rail, air, water and road transport systems and to enhance the inter-modal services to also achieve a modal shift from road to rail transport. With reference to the R&D programmes Intelligent Traffic Systems (ITS) in the US and TELTEN in Europe, an open system architecture is designed, open to evolutions in user needs and technologies. Based on this approach a transregional data exchange network is built up which serves as a communication backbone between information centres in the participating regions as content provider. The information is presented to the travelers via a set of multi-media traffic information systems that are operated as value added services. These are a personal intelligent communicator (PIC), fixed information terminals (FIT) and the roadside warning system COMPANION, as well as the exchange of dynamic traffic messages between regional traffic information centres (RTIC) in the subproject INTERMATRIX. These activities are part of the intelligent transport systems being validated in the context of the Transport Telematics Applications of the 4th Framework Programme on R&D of the EU. The paper summarizes the design and validation of the information services and the experience providing these services in a public private partnership in INFOTEN.
