GIS-T DESIGN FOR INTELLIGENT TRANSPORTATION SYSTEMS (ITS) APPLICATIONS
Traditionally, many transportation elements, such as highway agencies, railroad agencies, and emergency service, are being managed individually and operated as separate entities. To improve future Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) user service, it is important to integrate the transportation of people, movement of goods, as well as provide information service seamlessly around each municipality community. This paper describes a feasible system interface and information infrastructure design, applying the Geographical Information System (GIS) concept, to address future transportation information needs. This paper is based on a study being developed as a part of the National GIS-T Demonstration Effort for both the Taiwan National Freeway Bureau (TANFB), and Ministry of Transportation and Communications (MOTC), Taiwan, R.O.C. The GIS-T system currently under deployment will provide the integration of all available transportation related information services, better satisfy transportation management functions, and support the real-time community travel information service requirements.
