A PC IN EACH VEHICLE - AN EARLY DEPLOYMENT MEANS FOR INTERACTIVE TELEMATIC SERVICES

The multimedia world has demonstrated it - how to deploy an ever growing bundle of services to a variety of subscribers using only one type of terminal at the client side. The terminal will vary only with the complexity of its usage or with the comfort the subscriber needs, and not with one of the services itself. This positive experience can be applied to telematic services as well. The problem with telematic services today is that there are more ideas about which services can be offered to the motorist than how to do that while avoiding a mass of different devices in the vehicles and also assuring that the motorist will benefit from this new media and will not be overloaded by accessing all this information. Standards that define all the open questions of existing and future services, and how these services can be presented to the motorist in an easy and effective way, are far away. It will take years to come and experiences will grow slowly. This chicken and egg problem has to be solved now. One way of starting this kind of business is being tested currently in Germany using the same system architecture as in interactive multimedia services. This was implemented by copying the separation of content provider, service provider and network operator to achieve an open access for all services. In the vehicle, a PC-based computer is used with a software interface open to down load applications which will adjust the man-machine interface to the needs and comfort of the driver.
