DEVELOPMENT OF A COMMUNICATION SYSTEM FOR THE ELECTRONIC TOLL COLLECTION (ETC) SYSTEM OF JAPAN
This is the communication specifications for the electronic toll collection (ETC) system to be installed in the toll roads in Japan. ETC system is one of various applications of the Dedicated Short Range Communication (DSRC) technology which show great potential to meet increasing needs. The specifications were drawn up on the basis of the cooperative study of the Ministry of Construction, four major toll road authorities. The system is designed with the most advanced technologies to cope with the complicated toll road network and the variety of driver's needs. It considers microwave propagation characteristics under the toll gate environment, because road facilities and construction in the vicinity of the toll gate have a large impact on the system design, such as on antenna characteristics and interference suppression measures. Consequently, this specification comprises the most suitable design for the ETC system of Japan. The system will greatly contribute to the development of communication and wireless card technologies.
