THE NEW VARIABLE MESSAGE SIGN (VMS) ANIMATION SYSTEM FOR TRAFFIC MANAGEMENT OF THE PARIS RINGWAY
The aim of this paper is the presentation of the new VMS automatic animation system for traffic management of the Paris ringway called "Boulevard Peripherique" (BP) and its surrounding area. It will be able to manage more than 500 Variable Message Signs (VMS) and more than 3000 sensors. This system gathers automatically flow, occupancy and speed traffic data from the B.P. collector system and elaborated data from other systems (traffic data about external roadways and itineraries, etc.). Next, it elaborates traffic states, travel times, congestion states, closure states. These data are used by travel time and congestion information strategies to produce message blocks. There are three information strategy classes: automatic, manual, and external. The three automatic information strategies (travel times, congestion and closure) are programmed; they compute the values of the variables used in the message profiles; they are activated automatically at the system start-up. The manual strategies, called also "macro commands", are written by an administrator and activated by an operator. The external strategy is in charge of formatting the messages imported from external systems. This system can import and export not only traffic data (flow, occupancy, speed, traffic and congestion state, external itineraries traffic data) but also messages. Other types of data can be defined and exchanged. The profile messages constituted with static and dynamic parts are described by the administrator and can be modified at any time. So all the information displayed on the VMS are in total control. The traffic management is achieved through a user graphic interface that provides a geometric representation of the B.P. where the roadways are dynamically animated with the traffic states, and the VMS with the current displayed messages.
