THE "LOW-SULPHUR" PROBLEM-SOME NOTES ON THE INCIDENCE OF HIGH CYLINDER WEAR AND SCUFFING WHEN LOW-SULPHUR FUELS ARE USED IN MARINE DIESEL ENGINES
High cylinder wear and scuffing have occasionally been reported when a combination of low-sulphur fuel and highly alkaline cylinder oil has been used in low-speed marine Diesel engines. Factors other than sulphur content are involved and in addition the problem seems to be confined to certain engine types and operating conditions, especially those which give rise to high cylinder temperatures. In the majority of instances, however, experience shows that low-sulphur fuels are unlikely to give any trouble in service. This paper summarizes the information so far available from service and from laboratory work, and suggests a possible mechanism for the problem. Order from: BSRA as No. 47,179.
