STAINLESS STEEL FOR CHEMICAL TANKERS CARRYING PHOSPHORIC ACID
The Author, of Uddeholms AB, discusses the stainless steels used for the tanks of chemical tankers carrying phosphoric acid and other aggressive chemicals, with particular reference to the stainless steels supplied by his firm for this application. Among these is AISI 317L (the Company's UHB 734L), which has largely taken the place of AISI 316L; it often has nitrogen added for increased strength. The paper includes the results of tests in which the effects both of nitrogen and of grain size in stainless steels were investigated. The Company supplies stainless plate up to 14 m long by 3.2 m wide, with a maximum weight of 12 tons; various finishes are available. Plate edge-planed for submerged-arc welding and plate prefabricated in various ways (i.e., pressed or rolled to shape, etc.) can be supplied, and welding can be done by the Company or the customer. Weldability, welding processes, and weld testing are briefly discussed, together with the results of some Varestraint tests on welded nitrogen-alloyed stainless-steel plate (this test method is shown diagrammatically).
