DAMAGE ESTIMATES FOR PLATING OF SHIPS AND MARINE VEHICLES

This article examines the plastic behavior of rectangular plates and beams and demonstrates how relatively simple theoretical methods may be used to estimate the damage suffered by the plating of ships and marine vehicles when subjected to occasional lateral loads. A brief review of previous investigations on slamming, collision and ice damage is followed by more detailed considerations of the bow damage on large full ships due to wave impact and the influence of large local deck loadings on container ships.
