TRAFFIC LIGHT CAMERA DETECTS REDLIGHT VIOLATIONS

A brief description is given of a method in use at The Hague by police in which a vehicle crossing a red traffic light is automatically photographed. The name of the vehicle owner is found by means of the vehicle's licence number. A detection device is laid under the road surfacing at the red light stop line. A camera device is mounted 9 feet above the pavement, approximately 45 feet before the red light so that the picture includes the entire intersection area. The camera is activated at a pre-determined time. Two pictures are taken, the first at the red light stop line and the second picture 1 second later. In The Hague, 25 intersections are equipped for the red light camera, but only 5 cameras have been purchased to be used in rotation among the intersections. The cost of the equipment is considered to be compensated for by improved surveillance and more effective use of uniformed personnal. /TRRL/
