WHAT DO NORTH DAKOTA SCHOOL ADMINISTRATORS THINK ABOUT EDUCATION?

This is the result of a survey made to collect information from North Dakota school administrators with regard to the following: whether driver education was viewed as an important part of the total school program; whether driver education serves as a deterrent to traffic accidents; whether all students should be required to have a course in driver education either prior to graduation or prior to licensing; whether state funds should be earmarked for driver education programs (if so, to what extent); the composition of existing driver education programs in the schools; how driver education programs were rated by the administration, and other suggestions, recommendations and comments that might provide helpful insights into statewide planning efforts. The results of the survey were quite positive in all aspects. Seventy-eight percent of the school administrators who responded were of the opinion that driver education programs could help solve North Dakota's traffic problems; only seven percent disagreed. An overwhelming 93% felt that all students in high school should take drivers education, while 5% disagreed. Large numbers of respondents agreed that the state should be involved in various aspects of the driver education programs. Eight-five percent would agree to requiring all high schools to have a driver education course; 82% would agree to requiring all students to complete driver education prior to graduation; 88% would agree to requiring beginning drivers under 18 to complete an approved driver education course; and 86% indicate the desirability of having the state provide special funding to support driver education programs.
