The paper describes the ways in which existing lifesaving appliances can be improved to a certain extent, but research and development is required in order to achieve the best possible abandonment system which will work in the various emergency situations. A description is given of a new abandonment system developed in Norway. The survival craft may be launched 1) by free fall from heights up to 20 m, 2) by floating off when the ship is sinking or, 3) by conventional lowering.
