SHIP OPERATION IN HEAVY WEATHER
Several possible wave data collection schemes for application to ship operation in a deep water environment are discussed, with special emphasis on the use of the ship as the measuring platform. Wave data sources in general, their reliability and techniques for distribution to ships are reviewed, with special emphasis on visual and forecast methods, as well as direct wave measurements. The potential impact of improved wave data on board ship and their application to ship operation are illustrated with special reference to on-board systems and shore-based routing. Finally, an evaluation of three different systems for wave data collection is given, namely, disposable drifting buoys, moored buoys and shipboard systems (two types). Examples of typical operating principles are shown.
