TRANSPORTATION PLAN FOR THE ELDERLY AND HANDICAPPED

The objective of this study is to determine the transportation needs of the elderly and handicapped population in the St. Louis area and to develop effective ways of increasing their mobility through improvements to the public transportation system. Four steps were followed to accomplish the study objective. The first step was to identify the number and location of elderly and handicapped persons in the St. Louis Region, then to identify specific mobility limitations. The next step was to identify their travel needs, using data from other cities and local sources. The fourth step consisted of establishing a committee of elderly and handicapped persons and their representatives to provide a forum for discussion of the needs of this group. These steps and the elements of the plan for improving the mobility of the elderly and handicapped are discussed along with issues that need to be addressed for effectively meeting these needs.
