VALIDATION STUDIES FOR HEAD IMPACT INJURY MODEL

The objective of the study was to perform experiments involving the heads of sub-human primates and fresh unembalmed cadavers with sufficient precision and reliability so that a validation of an analytical model can be made for the impact situation, and to determine the brain injury mechanisms in the primate test from the pathology and engineering data obtained from the experiments. The static load-deflection response, and the resulting static principal strains on the skulls of two monkeys and one human cadaver, are reported. Thirty-nine live primate head impacts and two human cadaver head impacts are reported in the texts. Techniques for measuring epidural pressure during impact, strains on the skull, and placement of six accelerometers on the skull were developed.
