The workshop is one of a continuing series to develop information useful to the Department of Transportation policymakers through interaction of principal investigators in universities under contract to the Department and members of the Department responsible for programs of transportation research and development. Four sessions were chaired by DOT officials and addressed by policy officers at the federal and state levels and industry. The following topics were discussed: Why transportation research and development--an overview; The socio-economic consequence of federal initiatives; Lead-time to implementation, institutional requirements; Barriers to transfer of research and development results.
