POINT-FOLLOWER AUTOMATIC VEHICLE CONTROL: A GENERIC ANALYSIS
The three-part study examines the generic characteristics of the point-follower approach to vehicle control for Automated Guideway Transit Systems, under which vehicles are constrained to follow electronic signals that move along the guideway with predetermined speeds and spacings. The first part of the study involves a kinematic analysis of point-follower control during speed transitions and point-transfer maneuvers that are generally required to resolve merge conflicts. The second part consists of a dynamic analysis of point-follower control, formulated as a problem in classic control theory. The final part addresses the traffic merging problem by development of quasi-synchronous control algorithms for resolution of merge conflicts at network intersections of various geometries.
