ENERGY PROBLEMS IN THE GENERATION OF ALCOHOLS AND HYDROGEN AS ALTERNATIVE FUELS
The substances now under consideration as alternative automotive fuels are presented in a survey and are critically discussed taking into account basic boundary conditions. The synthesis methods for alcohols that can be prepared from biomass and water as well as for hydrogen are described, and the amount of energy required is investigated. In particular, the fuels methanol and hydrogen are analyzed. According to extensive studies, these fuels seem to offer the greatest advantages. In the particular situation of the FRG, methanol generation from coal will play an important role if new methods utilizing high-energy process heat from HTR reactors can be realized.
