SEAT BELT BUCKLES FOR PASSENGER CARS

A programme of research is reported in which access, engagement and release problems with a range of seat belt buckle types in bucket seats are examined. The data were obtained by recording the movements of 119 subjects considered to typify a large part of the New South Wales population of male and female drivers and adult passengers. It was concluded that there were no problems of access with buckles designed and located in accordance with current Australian design rules. Engagement and release of conventional push-button buckles were found to be simple matters to Australians who had become conditioned to finding this type in cars rather than novel types that on theoretical grounds might be considered superior because more attention had been given to ergonomic factors. /Author/TRRL/
