CHANGING TRENDS IN AUTOMOBILE RELIABILITY

During the last decades of our century an increasing shortage is developing mainly of energy, raw materials and food for the rapidly rising population in many parts of the world. Improving reliability characteristics of automobiles is an effective method to conserve resources. Factors influencing future automobile development are described. The main part of the paper highlights those activities, which have most direct effect on the achievement of reliability objectives and to show how the problem of systematically improving reliability is being tackled. A systems approach to the problem is presented, covering the choice of suitable reliability characteristics, the collection, analysis and utilisation of field information on reliability. A list of critical reliability activities, which have proved to be most helpful in developing a reliability assurance program is given. To facilitate decisions on what efforts to put into the achievement of a certain level of reliability and what economic advantages accrue from the attainment of that level an economic model enabling evaluation of the economic effect of changing reliability and other technical and economic characteristics is presented. /Author/TRRL/
