AUTOMATIC VEHICLE GUIDANCE TO RELIEVE DRIVER STRESS
AUTOMATISCHE FAHRZEUGFUEHRUNG ZUR ENTLASTUNG VON KRAFTFAHRERN
A review of system design and possible applications for automatic vehicle guidance were given at the Fisita-Congress 1974. This paper deals with technical problems of the vehicle-controller system. These problems have to be overcome, in order to make the system useful under general operating conditions. Realistic nonlinear dynamic controller behaviour has been first considered in the theoretical model used in this investigation. A method to determine optimal system parameters by introducing functional relationships (a) between controller parameters; (b) between controller data and vehicle speed will be shown. Further the development of a new control system will be described. This system is also able to operate the vehicle in an optimal manner on every possible trajectory. At the same time operating safety is improved and controller structure simplified. During this investigation numerous comparisons between theoretical and experimental results were carried out. Preliminary full scale road tests were conducted for validation of vehicle and controller models. Theoretical considerations combined with computational optimizing techniques were undertaken to improve significantly the overall system behaviour. Additional experiments were then done, to confirm theoretical results. Vehicle control theory turns out to be a useful tool for determining system characteristics prior to building the real system. This results in an economic and safe development method. /Author/TRRL/
