RESEARCH ON FUTURE VEHICLES - DEVELOPMENT OF AN ECONOMIC PEOPLE'S CAR FOR THE FUTURE

FORSCHUNGSOBJEKT LANGZEITAUTO - EIN BEITRAG ZUR ENTWICKLUNG VOLKS- UND WELTWIRTSCHAFTLICH OPTIMALER AUTOMOBILE DER ZUKUNFT

Shortly after publication of the meadow's study "limits of growth", Porsche started the examination of possible consequences on future vehicles. In September 1973, well before the energy crisis, the "long-life car" research project was presented as a result of these deliberations. The multitude of inherent problems demands the preliminary examination of possible economic repercussions. To this end, the Mannheim University is elaborating a systems-dynamics model. As the raw material and energy situation is of special importance major recycling aspects are being examined and promising trends in the material application with all vehicle subsystems being indicated under consideration of existing resources and technical problems. The economical optimization of the long-life car implies reduction of production expenditure to its strictly necessary minimum. That means avoidance of shortcomings and use of utility/cost optimum elements only. This aim necessitates special quantitive evaluation methods. The body serves to demonstrate first design proposals. Parallel to this project, Porsche is making efforts to introduce into series as many "long-life" characteristics as possible. Thus the paper ends with the description of the two-side hot-galvanized body, used in series since July 1975, and on the underbody of which porsche grants a 6-year-warranty against corrosion. /Author/TRRL/
