INFORMATION NOTE ON THE CONSTRUCTION OF SHOULDERS IN PAVEMENT STRENGTHENING WORKS

NOTE D'INFORMATION SUR L'EXECUTION DES EPAULEMENTS DANS LES TRAVAUX DE RENFORCEMENTS COORDONNES

One of the principal objectives of "coordinated pavement strengthening" is ensuring the calibration of the pavement at 7 M between white bands. This principle frequently necessitates the widening (or "shoulders") of the existing pavement. Experience shows that the advantages of the shoulders can be cancelled by the difficulties of construction or faults in design which lead to disintegration in a short time thus reducing the efficiency of the strengthening. This note assembles items of information concerning the quality of the shoulder. These include: the geometry and dimensioning of a typical shoulder, period of construction, opening of the excavation, compaction of the bottom of the excavation, filling in of the excavation, surveillance, maintenance. This note concerns only the roads supporting a traffic volume of more than 300 vehicles per day. /TRRL/
