COST-PERFORMANCE ANALYSIS MODEL OF ELECTRIC VEHICLES
The ministry of international trade and industry of the Japanese government has started a five year development program of electric vehicles in 1971 as the means of solving noise and air pollution problems in cities. In the development program, the computer model to analyze the relation between performance and cost of electric vehicles was developed in order to study the economic feasibility. In the model, maximum speed and acceleration, mileage per one battery charge and pay-load were selected as major indexes indicating vehicle performance, both initial and operating cost were singled to consist of three major components: battery, motor-controller and body-chassis. The computer program was composed of two phases, determination of component specifications to meet given vehicle performance and calculation on component cost, vehicle cost and operating cost. It showed that energy density of battery and mileage per one charge were important variables for optimum design of electric vehicles as the result of analysis on four types of electric vehicles. With regard to energy density of paste type lead storage battery, approximately 40-45 wh/kg is optimum from an economical point of view. /Author/TRRL/
