DEVELOPMENT OF SPECIFICATIONS FOR MEASUREMENT OF PAINT THICKNESS ON STRUCTURAL STEEL
The magnetic gages most commonly used to measure dry paint film thickness were examined critically, in the thickness range from 1 to 6 miles (25 to 152 microns), on structural steel surfaces. Standardized procedures were developed for use of the gages, and a series of painted panels, with seven different steel-surface profiles, were measured in six different laboratories, each using its own gages and operators. The resulting measurements were in surprisingly good agreement. True paint thicknesses were confirmed mainly by microscope measurements. Some interesting conditions studied were: presence of mill scale, proximity to edge of the steel or to other mass of steel, temperature extremes, stray magnetic fields, vibration, and tilting of the instrument. The resulting specification includes a standardized thickness measurement procedure which avoids the serious errors implicit in many current procedures and practices. /Author/
