EFFECT OF CONSTRUCTION ON CEMENT-TREATED MATERIALS
To apply a fundamental design theory which will fully utilize the construction materials and structural layout of the pavement, the designer must know the properties of the materials produced and constructed by the contractor. He should also know to what extent this differs from properties determined on laboratory prepared samples. To obtain answers on these questions samples of cement-treated materials were recovered from 10 contracts and their properties were compared with those of samples prepared in a laboratory from the same materials as used on the contract. The properties studied and evaluated in the report are bending strength, strain at break and the elastic modulus. Samples recovered from the various contracts indicated very little variation across a day's work and the section could therefore be accepted as homogeneous relative to the evaluted properties. The differences between works performed on different days was extremely significant, even when the sections were constructed with the same materials, by the same contractor and according to the same specifications. This sections constructed on different days could not be regarded as of the same quality and as having the same properties. The variation in properties within a layer was significant and the upper half of the layer seemed to have higher values than thelower half. The difference between field and laboratory prepared samples was significant and the field samples generally tended to have lower values than the laboratory prepared samples. Not enough information was available to really indicate how much lower they were. /Author/
