MANUAL OF OPERATION FOR ARRB WAVE PROPAGATION EQUIPMENT FOR THE MEASUREMENT OF ELASTIC MODULI
Measurement of the velocity of waves propagated along a pavement surface is one means of determining the dynamic moduli of the layers in a pavement structure. The Australian Road Research Board has assembled equipment for this purpose. The equipment is mounted in a van and is completely self-contained, allowing rapid set-up in the field. A travelling wave system of known frequency is induced in the pavement by means of a small vertical vibrator placed on the pavement surface. The wave velocity at the surface is determined by measuring the change in phase of the wave with distance. This velocity is determined at a number of vibration frequencies. Theoretically determined relationships are used to determine the layer moduli from this data. This Manual describes the use of the Australian Road Research Board equipment and discusses the limitations of the method. /Author/
