A SOLUTION TO THE SERIES PRODUCTION OF ALUMINUM LNG SPHERES
The manufacturing concept established by General Dynamics to construct the large spherical aluminum tanks for its LNG shipbuilding program is disucssed and described in detail. The spheres are manufactured independently of the ship structure at a new facility near Charleston, South Carolina, then transported by a specially designed barge to the shipyard in Quincy for loading into the hulls. The use of dual sites, whereby specialized fabrication and assembly techniques can be applied to series production of sphees under precise dimensional control using high-quality automated welding technology, permits the spheres to be manufactured in parallel with ship construction, thereby eliminating and impact on the shipyard hull erection schedule prior to the installations of the spheres into the ships.
